In the beginning of the 20th century, the forests of redwoods and sequoias in Northern California were at risk of total decimation due to reckless logging practices. One grass-roots organization, the Women’s League to Save the Redwoods, led by Laura Perrott Mahan, stood tall at a critical moment and stopped illegal cutting in what is today the Founders Grove in Dyerville Flats. Teaming up with the legal expertise of Laura’s husband, James Mahan, and his brother, Lawrence, these conservation pioneers secured injunctions to stop the cutting. Subsequently, the women in the League raised funds and rallied interest all the way to the Governor’s office and the White House. Their efforts ultimately led to the creation of the Humboldt Redwoods State Park, the world’s largest remaining contiguous old-growth forest of coast redwoods.
